Internships

Readorium

Readorium is an online education start-up company; it provides interactive, interesting articles, mostly of the scientific field, for children of all ages and reading levels. I interned at Readorium the summer of 2015, where I wrote and published two articles for middle-school students and edited many more. I also performed market research for Readorium, trying to find school districts and private schools looking for new, innovative approaches to teaching.

I received a recommendation letter from the CEO of Readorium, Harriet Iseche. You can read the letter in the 'References' tab under the 'Home' button in the menu bar.

Bergen County Debate Club

Bergen County Debate Club strives to teach students the intricate art of public speaking and debate. I was offered a paid internship at the Bergen County Debate Club the summer of 2015. With my experience in the Junior Statesmen of America (JSA) program, I felt confident that I had the knowledge and the skills to teach some of the techniques which I have learned through extensive public speaking; throughout the summer, I would work with a partner to teach the course with about 20 elementary and middle-school aged students. We were given a significant amount of autonomy, so that we could create our own lesson plan, public speaking activities, and debates. The children learned to speak in both a one-to-one format, as required for interviews, and in front of a group of people.

Many of the children were brought to the summer program because they are quiet and shy; therefore, we found topics that they could relate to and were passionate about, hence making public speaking more intriguing and captivating. Interestingly, I believe I learned a significant amount about public speaking and debate myself through teaching the children; explaining how to properly voice an opinion helped me see my own strengths and weaknesses. Over the two week summer program, the children evolved spectacularly. They learned to stand up straight, to look others in the eye, and to speak slowly and clearly, yet with an enthusiastic emphasis on what is important. This drastic change alone made the project worth the effort.
